Cross-Country Guardsmen

In support of the Wounded Warrior Project, members of the U.S. Coast Guard are traveling cross country in a unique way. “We go about an average of 150 miles a day when we can,” said Ray Rehberg, member of the U.S. Coast Guard. It’s the beginning of week two of a 28 day trip across the United States, and it has proven to be promising for Rehberg and other off-duty guardsmen who are, what they refer to as, “carting for a cause.” As soon as we heard about this great project for an even better cause, we knew we had to jump on board. They started with a stock Club Car golf cart and we knew immediately how we could bring some attention to the vehicle, the message and give the guys some great looking wheels on their amazing journey. The crew is heading from Petaluma, CA to Yorktown, VA on an electronically powered golf cart. This mission started from a simple idea when Rehberg was teaching about electricity in a U.S. Coast Guard class, and used a golf cart as an example. “From there it developed to ‘Has anyone every driven one across America,’” said Rehberg. “To if we are going to do something like this, let’s do it for a worthy cause.”

The organization these men chose is the Wounded Warrior Project, and they have a goal to raise $50,000 by the end of this journey. “Wherever there is a veteran, we want to see them,” said Rehberg. “We want to hear their story and get it out there.” Though it may only travel at 25-miles-per-hour, Rehberg is hoping the symbolism of the golf cart is quickly engraved in the minds of everyone who sees it. “Say oh my gosh look at those coastys go,” said Rehberg. “Look at what we are doing on our off time, our own leave and our own resources.”

With more than half a journey and most of the country still on the horizon, there’s plenty more people this crew wants to touch. “It is just emotional it. It really is,” said Rehberg. “It still blows my mind that this is happening as we speak.”
